VC Spotlight: Slow Ventures
Slow Ventures never chased speed for sport. It built conviction in a world addicted to momentum. Dave Morin launched Slow in 2009, long before patience became a contrarian asset class. He saw that VC didn’t need more gamblers, it needed believers who’d sit still long enough to let genius mature. When Kevin Colleran and Sam Lessin, both early Facebook architects, joined in 2011, Slow became something rare in the Valley: a fund fluent in product, patient in pace, and built to think in decades, not rounds.
Kevin Colleran, one of Facebook’s 1st sales leaders, brought the operator’s instinct for scale and brand architecture. Sam Lessin, Harvard classmate of Mark Zuckerberg and one of Facebook’s most methodical product minds, brought data discipline and long-term design logic. By 2013, Colleran was running point as Managing Director. By 2015, Lessin joined officially as GP after co-founding Fin Exploration Co. with Andrew Kortina (Venmo). Add Will Quist from Industry Ventures, and Slow’s table looked like the All-Star game of network, capital, and consumer psychology. Dave Morin stepped back in 2019 to launch Offline Ventures, but Slow’s philosophy, conviction > consensus, never left the room.
Today that thesis powers 529+ investments. Solana. Robinhood. Slack. Airtable. Venmo. A roll call of the modern digital economy. Slow didn’t “spot trends.” It built frameworks to trust them before others did. Solana alone returned 5,000x on a $0.04 buy-in before peaking north of $200. That wasn’t luck, it was alignment between thesis & timing. Since inception, Slow’s deployed $800M+ and is raising $275M more in 2024 across Fund VI ($165M), Opportunity Fund III ($110M), and the $60M+ Creator Fund, a capital stack built for conviction over convenience.
The new generation is proof the model compounds. Yoni Rechtman and Megan Lightcap became the firm’s 1st principal-to-partner promotions in a decade. Lightcap now leads the Creator Fund, a $60M+ portfolio betting on the future of individual enterprise. Her deal with Marina Mogilko, $1.7M for 5% of earnings for 30 yrs, wasn’t just creative finance. It was Slow’s philosophy turned into a contract: invest in people, not noise.
From Solana to SMBs, fintech to healthcare, Slow backs those who move deliberately and think independently. Its founders don’t sprint for exits, they build for endurance. From Dave & Brit Morin’s Sunrise (mental health research) to community investments across the creator & startup ecosystems, the firm’s impact compounds far beyond returns.
