Dr. Jeff Chang, a prodigy turned ER radiologist, didn’t need a second opinion. Burnout was spreading faster than innovation, and tech wasn’t just lagging, it was MIA. Ten years in the trenches, he saw radiologists drowning in dictation, missing follow-ups, and aging out of the game from sheer exhaustion. So he did what most don’t, went back to school. Not med school. Machine learning. And that’s where the signal finally cut through the noise.
Enter Doktor Gurson, serial entrepreneur, domain disruptor, YC alum, and CEO with the kind of résumé that reads like a highlight reel. Together, they founded Rad AI in 2018 out of San Francisco. Not to dabble in AI for radiology, but to build the first generative AI suite that gets radiologists. As in, saves them 50% of their time, cuts error rates in half, and boosts cancer follow-up compliance from 30% to 75%.
And the market? It responded. Loudly.
Rad AI just banked another $8 million in strategic funding from four heavy-hitting health systems, Advocate Health, Memorial Hermann Health System, Corewell Health, and Atlantic Health System, bringing their Series C total to $68 million and their overall haul to $148 million. They’re not just raising, they’re stacking validation. These systems run 100+ hospitals and touch millions of patients. When they invest, it’s not speculative, it’s surgical.
Let’s talk traction. Rad AI’s tech runs inside a third of all U.S. health systems. Nine of the ten largest radiology practices use it daily. Their revenue grew 8,710% from 2020 to 2023, enough to land them 19 on DeloitteFast500. Their impact? 700 million imaging exams a year, 80% of all healthcare data, processed through their proprietary LLMs tuned to the radiologist’s voice like a personal DJ set.
Not content to stay domestic, the team is eyeing EU and APAC markets while integrating with Bayer’s Calantic platform. They're also building with Google Cloud’s MedLM and Gemini models. Think AI co-pilots, not just helping radiologists work, but helping them breathe.
Big congrats to Jeff Chang, Doktor Gurson, and Dr. Elizabeth Bergey for taking the long view, and doing the hard thing. They didn’t chase AI hype. They diagnosed a pain point, built the antidote, and proved it could scale. And now? They’re not just improving radiology. They’re Rad-iating change across the healthcare system.
