FA Company Spotlight: Supabase
Supabase didn't just arrive, it detonated onto the backend scene in January 2020 when Paul Copplestone and Anthony Wilson walked out of Entrepreneur First in Singapore holding a vision: real-time Postgres without compromise. Paul had been elbow-deep in Postgres at Nimbus for Work and hated Firebase's query limits. Anthony, fresh from exits in Crypto Squad and STYLINDEX, saw something serious in that frustration. Together they launched Supabase and flipped the backend conversation.
Paul Copplestone serves as CEO, and Anthony Wilson commands the tech side as CTO. They've built a leadership squad that reads like a precision strike: Scott Buxton at the finance wheel, Rory Wilding running ops, Kevin Brolly owning customer success, Tim Palmer driving sales, Tracy Lane steering legal, and A.i.ron Douchinsky building enterprise alliances. Even their first hires came from the open-source trenches, Steve Chavez and fellow maintainers, planting community DNA deep in the org. Twenty percent of early hires were ex-founders, showing that iteration and accountability aren't optional.
Supabase solves a problem every dev has felt: choosing between Firebase's real-time simplicity or Postgres's relational depth. Supabase delivers both. It gives you Postgres with pgvector support, built-in Auth with JWT, OAuth and row-level security, auto-generated REST and GraphQL APIs, real-time WebSocket subscriptions, scalable object storage, edge functions, and vector embeddings for AI. All open-source, fully permissive license, usable self-hosted or in the managed cloud. That stack doesn't just snap, read and write times clock in up to four times faster than Firebase alternatives.
The traction is undeniable: more than two million developers, over 79,000 GitHub stars, 140,000 Twitter followers, 3.5 million hosted databases, 5,000 new ones per day. They're powering production workloads at Mozilla, GitHub, Netflix, Microsoft, 1Password, Patreon, PwC, Johnson & Johnson. Supabase pulled in north of $20 million in managed-cloud revenue in 2024, doubling year-over-year, and the Series D in April 2025, $200 million led by Accel, joined by Coatue, Craft, Felicis, and angels Guillermo Rauch, Kevin Weil, Taylor Otwell, valued them at $2 billion.
This isn't a platform, it's a posture shift. Supabase is targeting startups, enterprises, AI pioneers asking for low-latency relational backends without selling their souls. They were early to pgvector and now sit at the backbone of the "vibe coding" wave. Their remote-first, asynchronous world of 60+ people across 25 countries runs on egoless engineering, Launch Weeks, hackathons, bounties, open governance, a global brain built for velocity.
They're hiring across engineering, product, design, marketing, developer relations. Supabase wants builders who ship, thrive in async, and own the open-source future. If that's you, the hiring link's in the comments
