FA Company Spotlight: Mercury
In 2017, three founders hit a wall. Not a metaphorical one, a real, bureaucratic brick from the 20th-century banking world. Immad Akhund, Maximilian Tagher, and Jason Zhang were building at Heyzap, scaling fast, raising money, shipping code. But every time money moved through the system, the banks slowed them down. Wire delays. Branch visits. User interfaces that looked like relics of the dial-up era. So they built Mercury, and rewired the core of business banking from first principles.
Today, Mercury isn’t just a bank. It’s the operating system for over 200,000 companies moving money, managing cash, and running high-speed finance without the red tape. Built in San Francisco, engineered with Haskell, and designed to feel like software, not a spreadsheet. Mercury’s not just moving fast, it’s moving smart, stacking ten quarters of profitability, $500M in 2024 revenue, and $156B in transaction volume.
This March, Mercury locked in a $300M Series C led by Sequoia Capital, with Spark Capital, Marathon Asset Management, Coatue, CRV, and Andreessen Horowitz on the cap table. That puts Mercury at a $3.5B valuation, double from 2021, and adds board firepower like Timothy J. Mayopoulos (remember SVB?), Sonya Huang, Tom Brown, and co-founder Jason Zhang. Not bad for a company that captured $2B in deposits in five days when SVB crumbled, and kept 95% of it six months later.
But Mercury’s story isn’t just financial. It’s cultural. It’s architectural. It’s technical. With a backend written entirely in Haskell, a 1.2 million line codebase loading in 2.7 minutes (thanks to their open-source ghciwatch), and a development culture that fuses precision with ambition. This is a team of 850 pushing toward 1,000, offering $5M in Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) coverage per startup and doing it through real bank partnerships, not regulatory theater.
CEO Immad Akhund isn’t just leading, he’s recruiting. Mercury has 42+ open roles across engineering, product, compliance, and ops. If you want to build the future of business finance, not just talk about it, Mercury’s got a seat, a budget, and a roadmap with your name on it.
