Company Spotlight: CoopHive
The story of CoopHive begins inside Protocol Labs under the name Project Bravo, a research initiative testing whether decentralized computing needed more horsepower or simply more coordination. Levi Rybalov, a mechanism design researcher who had been running deep on distributed systems since 2017, recognized that Bacalhau’s compute engine had power, but without verifiable payments, escrows, and provenance it was like highways without traffic laws. In January 2024, CoopHive spun out as its own entity, with Rybalov as CEO, formalizing a general-purpose coordination protocol for compute and data.
The leadership roster reads like a draft class pulled from the edge of academia and open-source. Vlad Radu, VP of Engineering, pairs a PhD candidacy in wireless network sensors from University Politehnica of Bucharest with engineering roles at GoPro, Ethernity Cloud, and Xperi. Aayushi Jain, R&D Lead, brings EECS training from UC Berkeley and applied machine learning experience at Squishy Robotics and Deloitte. Cornell’s Pratham Dave and Berkeley’s Vardhan Shorewala focus on computational frameworks, while Senior Software Engineer Taylor Hulsmans carries OSS contributions to IPFS and Filecoin. Software Architect Yang Zheng adds product depth from Mana Finance and Matrix Inc. The advisory bench runs deep: Michael Zargham of BlockScience, Chris Hill of DeSci Labs, Luke Marsden of helix.ml, Kai Davenport of Protocol Labs, and David Aronchick, Kubernetes’ first product manager.
The product is direct in ambition: a multichain, multicurrency marketplace where compute jobs are posted, nodes offer resources through Docker or WASM, solvers match deals through staking and slashing, and every result is locked to chain via CIDs. Escrows and mediation are not afterthoughts, they are primitives. The innovation is agent-first economics, where autonomous agents can negotiate pricing, scheduling, and verification without human intermediaries. For decentralized science, it means computational records are reproducible and immutable. For Filecoin and IPFS, it turns stored data into living markets instead of passive archives.
By Q2 2024, CoopHive launched testnets showing escrow and verification in action. Collaborations with the Filecoin Virtual Machine and Inter-Planetary Consensus teams stacked compute atop exabyte-scale storage. Pilot projects span genomics, federated learning, carbon credit tracking, and autonomous agent scheduling. Each case is a preview of the decentralized economic singularity CoopHive is wiring into existence.
The culture is remote-first, transparency-driven, and steeped in open source. Decision-making is lightweight and on-chain. Cross-functional sprints bring research and product together.
